Past successes and future challenges: summarising ERB 20th Anniversary

On February 14-16, Euroregion Baltic celebrated its 20th Anniversary during a 3 days long series of meetings and conferences hosted by ERB International Permanent Secretariat in Elbląg. The celebration, which saw the participation of nearly 150 guests representing delegations from Russia, Poland, Sweden, Denmark and Lithuania, was a good opportunity to take stock of the situation, capitalise the results achieved over the last 20 years and lay the foundation for a fruitful future cooperation.

In order to celebrate its 20th anniversary, on February 14-15, 2018 Euroregion Baltic is going to organize two days long series of meetings and officially launch SB YCGN and Umbrella. SB YCGN (South Baltic Youth Core Groups Network) project focuses on the cooperation of different actors, like local and regional authorities, universities, NGOs, etc. in the field of youth questions. youth participation in decision making on the local level and strengthen the capacities of local and regional actors in the South Baltic Programme area in youth policy and sustainable development. The project has the ambition to create a cross-border network with joint capacity building events, based on analysis and research of partner countries with following the international participatory campaign. UMBRELLA aims at developing know-how capacities for small local and regional organisations in the South Baltic Programme area to initiate their active participation in the cross-border cooperation in daily activities.

Both to be held at the Old Town Hall (ul. Stary Rynek 25, Elblag) on Wednesday 14th at 9.00, the kick-off meetings will see the participation of project and associated partners with the aim of discussing the overall objective, purposes, targets, results and activities to be carried out. On August 18-20 the ReGeneration 2030 Summit is going to be held on the Åland Islands (Denmark).

The summit – organised and led by numerous organisations and partners in the Nordic and Baltic Sea Region – is designed as a meeting place meeting place where the youth discuss and propose solutions to reach the UN sustainable development goals. During the summit, youth will take the lead in discussions about the present and the future of the region exchanging knowledge and experience, reflecting and acting together.

Starting from February 2018 Euroregion Baltic – International Permanent Secretariat based in Elblag (Poland) is willing to host a volunteer, in the frame of Interreg Volunteer Youth – IVY, up to 6 months. IVY stands for Interreg Volunteer Youth and it’s designed to offer the possibility to young Europeans aged 18-30 to serve as volunteers in cross-border, transnational or interregional programmes and related projects. Being solidarity and volunteering at the heart of the IVY, this initiative is part of the European Solidarity Corps. The initiative is aimed at involving young volunteers to support, promote and report the concrete achievements of Interreg programmes and projects, as well as generally promote cooperation across European borders and related values such as solidarity. The IVY will give volunteers the opportunity to familiarise with the Interreg programmes and projects, make them aware of the many benefits of collaboration among EU internal borders as well as enhance their sense of European solidarity, citizenship and civic engagement.

Since September 2017, Euroregion Baltic – International Permanent Secretariat has been hosting an IVY volunteer from Italy, working on the communication and dissemination related activities as well as the capitalization of the results of the surveys carried out in the South Baltic Region.

In the margins of the conference organized to present the cross-border comparative report and take stock of the situation, project managers in charge of the project CaSYPoT had the chance to meet Ms Greta Klotz from the Eurac Research, Bolzano (Italy) and Ms Annalisa Cevasco from the Agenzia di Sviluppo GAL Genovese, Genova (Italy) to evaluate the possibility to set up a concrete collaboration between CaSYPoT and GaYA (Interreg Alpine Space) projects in 2018.

Adopted in December 2017 as a flagship project of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, INTERCONNECT serves as a clear example of a change in the public transport system in the Baltic Sea Region. Indeed, the EUSBSR is implemented, among others, by flagships namely a single project, a set of project contributing to the same action or a process. According to the EUSBSR the label of a flagship can be given to a project/process that fulfils certain criteria: it has a high macro-regional impact; it contributes to meeting the objectives, indicators and targets of the EUSBSR; it is related to the implementation of one or more actions of the policy area/horizontal action concerned.

The conference that took place in the City of Słupsk on December 11-13th CaSYPoT was the chance to present the CaSYPoT local and cross-border reports. The results of the surveys carried out among teenagers in the municipalities involved in the project have been analysed and compared by universities. Based on them joint knowledge-based youth strategy will be created in ERB as well as in the participating municipalities. It will allow addressing several youth problems in the South Baltic area. Additionally, more tools for maintaining the dialogue with youth and increasing their participation will be developed and tested.
