EC supports local border traffic in entire Kaliningrad Region

On 29th July 2011 the European Commission presented a proposal to amend the Regulation (EC) No 1931/2006 laying down rules on local border traffic at the external land borders of the Member States by including the entire Kaliningrad Region and selected Polish administrative districts in the eligible border area including Gdynia, Gdańsk, Sopot, Olsztyn and Elbląg.

Once adopted, the amendment would allow additional border zone residents to travel more easily across the across the border and within the neighbourhood area. It would also consider the entire Kaliningrad Region as a border area thus preventing an artificial division of that region and facilitating and enhancing economic and cultural interchange with neighbouring EU border regions of Poland. The proposal fulfils the recommendation presented by Euroregion Baltic Executive Board in the Joint Statement in support of the local border traffic regime with the Kaliningrad Region adopted in Copenhagen on 23rd September 2010, and will most certainly strengthen future cooperation within Euroregion Baltic.
