European Parliament supports local border traffic for entire Kaliningrad Region

On 1st December 2011 the European Parliament supported the European Commission’s proposal to amend the Regulation No 1931/2006 on local border traffic on the external borders of European Union concerning the inclusion of the Kaliningrad Region.

According to the amendment, the whole Kaliningrad Region and certain Polish administrative districts of Pomorskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie regions will be treated as a single border zone. This will allow all people living within this area to travel across the border more easily, thus contributing to the enhancement of economic and cultural exchanges. The resolution was passed with 556 votes in favour, 69 against and 12 abstentions. The proposal will now be submitted to the Council for approval. Once approved, it will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the EU Official Journal.
