Polish EU Presidency to focus on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region

The review of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, due to take place in Autumn 2011 under the Polish presidency, provides an excellent opportunity to focus on the developments in the region of the Baltic Sea, first of all examining what has been achieved through the macroregional strategy so far and for considering future developments.

The report of the European Commission on the EUSBSR to be presented in June, will constitute a basis for further discussions and the frame for the review process. The political consultations with member states will be launched in the upcoming weeks. To secure transparent and open debate on the review of the strategy Poland is planning to convene a Friends of Presidency working group in July. The European Parliament as well as the Committee of Regions will be included in the process of consultations. All suggestions highlighted by the stakeholders during the XII BDF Summit/II Annual Forum EUSBSR as well as XIX BSSSC Conference will be taken into account in the review process. The list of topics that need to be addressed when reviewing the Baltic Sea Strategy is long and complex including aspects of governance, communication through financing to political ownership.
