Best practices outside the Baltic Sea Region

While water recycling is still relatively new around the Baltic Sea, it has long been established in other parts of Europe – across semi-arid and humid regions alike. To learn from these experiences, the WaterMan project explored a wide range of real-world examples and at-scale approaches across the EU, with a view to adapting them for broader application across the Baltic Sea Region.

Below you’ll find documentation of these study trips, offering further inspiration on how to get started with water recycling.

WaterMan Study Trip #1: Water reuse in practice – Co-existence with water scarcity in the Region of Murcia in Spain. (Murcia Region / ES, 22-24 April 2025)

Water recyling & utilisation of alternative sources of water are still a rather new topics in the regions around the Baltic Sea. However, it is a long-term practice in southern Europe. The Region of Murcia in Spain is a benchmark in this field, which has managed to increase the rate of reusing wastewater from 0% to 98% within the last 20 years. The WaterMan study trip,  carried out in cooperation with the General Directorate of Water of the Region of Murcia, provided profound insights into this success story from different perspectives, including on-site visits to practical examples of water recycling and the opportunity to get into a direct exchange with key stakeholders & proficient experts on how to re-organise water supply against background of climate change and increasing water scarcity.

WaterMan Study Trip #2: Water recycling as an instrument for safeguarding climate-resilient water supply in humid regions. (Flanders / BE & Zeeland / NL, 14-16 Jan 2025)

In the regions of Flanders / BE & Zeeland / NL, water recycling is utilised for ensuring resilient water supply since many years. Practical applications include indirect potable reuse in coastal areas, “circular city districts” with rainwater & greywater recycling, collective stormwater management & recycling in climate-resilient suburban neighbourhoods, and industrial reuse of municipal wastewater. The two-days study tour examined them on-the-spot and to get into a direct exchange with responsible hands-on experts. The Roundtable Talk in Brussels on regulatory frameworks & support schemes at regional, national & EU level that took plabe back-to-back completed the comprehensive introduction to status quo & future prospects of water recycling in humid regions
