Cypriote Presidency in EU

Cyprus has taken EU Presidency. On 30 June a press release was communicated stating the six month Programme of the Cyprus Presidency which will work Τowards a Better Europe, more relevant to its citizens and to the world. The priorities of the Programme are: 1. Europe, more efficient and sustainable, 2. Europe, with a better performing and growth economy, 3. Europe, more relevant to its citizens, with solidarity and social cohesion and, 4. Europe in the world, closer to its neighbours.

On 13th June 2012 Euroregion Baltic (ERB) gathered its members in Nexø, Bornholm for the 3rd Annual Forum entitled: “Cooperating to meet common challenges in the Baltic Sea Region”. Around 60 participants from the national, regional and local levels around the Baltic Sea region congregated to gather new knowledge about the current situation concerning labour markets, and in particular unemployment among the youngest of our citizens, prevailing in the EU, Baltic Sea Region and ERB member regions. On 26th June the Council of the European Union at the General Affiars Council meeting adopted the conclusions on the completion of the revision of the EU Strategy of the Baltic Sea Region.

Between 29 and 31 May Mr Lars Albak from Bornholm Business Center paid a visit in Warmia and Mazury Region. His visit was based on two important foundations: 1. closer links between companies and business support institutions will contribute to economic development of Bornholm and Warmia and Mazury, and 2. creation of practical dimension of economic cooperation between these regions has to  become a model of diverse cooperation of partners in Euroregion Baltic.

Six pan-Baltic organisations: Baltic Development Forum, Baltic Sea States Subregional Cooperation, CPMR Baltic Sea Commission, Baltic 7 Islands, Euroregion Baltic and Union of the Baltic Cities, have jointly adopted the position paper on the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The paper addresses among others some key issues related to the coordination of the Strategy, multi-level governance, relation ot the EU policies and regional development plans, involvement of thiord countries and private sector. “Marketing study on shipping and passenger connections between Gdynia and Baltiysk/Kaliningrad” – a report by the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk developed within the INTERFACE project has just been made available in English in order to obtain contributions to a discussion on how to upgrade the existing tiny sealink Gdynia-Baltiysk – to a real motorway of the sea – although outside of TEN-T network. The Commission released the new communication on the EUSBSR on Friday 23 March 2012. The transition of the Strategy's four pillars into the three objectives has thus been officially communicated. See the text of the communication here.

A new website has been officially launched on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region by Colin Wolfe, Head of Unit of DG Regio at the opening of the 3rd Working Meeting of the EUSBSR in Vilnius on 21st March 2012. Check out here.
